𧳠What to Pack for a Late-Night Airport Arrival

Before we get started with our San Juan Airport Hotel mystery walk, here are a few things we never leave home without. Arriving late means you’re navigating on fumes. Here are our suggestions that always make travel easier:
- A good travel pillow β Compact, packable, comfortable. Complete privacy.
- Silk Pillow Case β For a wrinkle-free face. It really works! Make sure it is NOT satin.
- Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones β For a peaceful, stress-free flight.
- Bright luggage handle wraps β Spot your bag fast at midnight baggage claim.
- Ultra-light inflatable seat cushion β This has saved my behind and back many times.
- A portable charger β Wandering airports for 45 minutes burns battery fast. π
- Travel Blanket β Compact and warm. Don’t count on the airline for a blanket!
- Womens Comfortable walking shoes β Those terminal hallways are long. Very long.
- Mens Comfortable Walking Shoes β We both love Danner, comfortable and long-lasting.
βοΈ It’s 11:30 PM. Now, Where is the San Juan Airport Hotel?

We flew into San Juan, Puerto Rico, arriving at 11:30 p.m, tired and ready to fall into a bed. Not wanting to wander around looking for a taxi so late at night, I’d booked the San Juan Airport Hotel, the only hotel located directly inside Luis MuΓ±oz MarΓn International Airport. Our arrival was in Terminal B, and the hotel was in Terminal D. The hotel website said, ‘Forget the shuttle. At San Juan Airport Hotel, you are just steps away from your gate.” Great! How hard could it be?
I saw signs for Terminal D and headed in that direction. The hunt was on. There’d be signs along the way to the hotel, right? The front desk assured us it was easy to find. “Just follow the signs,” they said. Simple, right?
Reader, it was just not that simple. (Sometimes, it just never is!)
πΊοΈ The Midnight Airport Maze

Here’s something the hotel website doesn’t mention: at midnight, the airport terminal is a maze of long, unmarked hallways with zero seating between gates. (There were actually people sleeping on the floor β because there’s simply nowhere else to sit.) We wandered back and forth, two or three times, long enough that the sleeping passengers probably wondered what our problem was.

We tried three times to find our way:
- The janitor: We walked all the way to the end of Terminal D looking for signs. No hotel. No hotel signs. The janitor tried to help. Language barrier β his English wasn’t strong and our Spanish was worse. He pointed us back the way we came. Sigh!
- The coffee kiosk woman: The only open shop at that hour gave it her best shot. Go over there, turn, and go down (or was it up) the escalator. We didn’t see an escalator. Hmmm…
- The police officer: After wandering for about 1/2 hour, we spotted him casually chatting with someone. He took one look at our faces, walked us to a restricted door, unlocked it, and pointed the way. Finally. π
After the fact, we found these directions on the Internet. Hopefully, you will find them helpful. So will we, if there’s a “next time.”
- Directions as per Google: From the Lower Level (Arrivals/Baggage Claim), you can easily walk over to the nearest elevator or stairs.
Take the elevator or stairs up one floor to the 2nd level (Departures).
Follow the hallway corridors toward Terminal D, near the airline ticket counters.
You will see clear signage guiding you directly to the hotel’s front desk.
π¨ The San Juan Airport Hotel: Spartan but Spotless

The San Juan Airport Hotel is exactly what it sounds like β a no-frills, clean, convenient place to sleep before an early flight or after a late arrival. Our room had a bed, a bathroom, and not much else. No nightstands. No dresser. Spartan doesn’t begin to cover it.
But here’s the upside: it was immaculate. Our window looked directly out at the control tower. Planes glided past periodically through the night. Oddly peaceful β once you get used to it. π

Bottom line: If you need a crash pad after a late-night arrival at SJU, this works. Don’t expect the Marriott. Do expect a friendly hotel receptionist, clean sheets and the most unique runway view you’ll ever sleep next to. The San Juan Airport Hotel has a restaurant, free breakfast, a workout room and a rooftop terrace. Unfortunately, we were too late (or to early) to enjoy any of it!
π± Quick Tip: Save Money on Your Phone Before You Land
Before you buy an international SIM card β don’t. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, which means your regular U.S. carrier almost certainly covers you. Ours did. Check your plan before you travel and save yourself the hassle.

π Next Stop: The Marriott β and the Real Puerto Rico Adventure Begins
The next morning, we transferred to the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino on Condado Beach β and the vibe shift was immediate. Ocean views, warm breezes, and the beginning of a Puerto Rico we’ll absolutely return to. But that’s a whole other post. π
